There are many sciences of the mind, memory is just one of those. Memory is important to everyone, whether someone want to retain something for a test, or they are concerned about memory loss due to age. The brain’s complexities far out measure those of any computer. With a computer, more memory space can be added by using another disk. The memory of the mind is more like a muscle. It takes a little training and effort to improve it. Short term memory is the one used every day for simple tasks like price comparison, or looking up an address. It works like a filter, retaining the information only for the time you’ll need it. Long term memory is for the things that you feel are important, and put in a little effort to remember them. Things like the date of your high school prom, or the first time you went white water rafting.
There are exercises you can do to help improve your memory. Keep information organized, and write down notes or lists in the same place, every time. Keep your address book, date book, and your lists all in one place. Not only will you know right where to find things, you’ll develop a routine. The routine will strengthen your memory, and eventually, you’ll start to notice that you need to refer to the books less often.
Something else to aid in strengthening your memory is to know how you learn. Some people are visual learners, while others learn better by listening. Use as many senses as you can when you take in new information. If you learn visually, read out loud. If you use tools such as audio discs, follow along in the book. Then take a few notes. Writing things down helps to create a memory.
